Along one side of our community site sits a large stone retaining wall with nearly 2,000 individual pockets and planting spaces built into its face. Rather than leave it bare, we are turning it into a productive edible wall — a living, growing feature that will provide fresh strawberries and draw people in to garden together.
The wall is already partially established but needs weeding, fresh compost in each pocket, and strawberry plants set in place. Once planted, the wall will be low-maintenance and highly rewarding — cascading foliage, white flowers in spring, and fruit through summer and into autumn.
How You Can Help
This project runs almost entirely on volunteer effort and donated materials. The two things we need most are hands to help plant and weed, and strawberry plants — either donated directly or funded through a small contribution. Plants cost between £2 and £3 each, and we need up to 1,000 to fill the wall in stages. Compost, plant feed, and basic tools are also needed to get each pocket properly prepared.
If you have surplus strawberry runners from your own garden, we would love to receive them. Even a handful of plants makes a real difference across a wall this size.
